Coastal Leanings

The Simple Joy.

To the Sea, to the Sea.

I must go down to the seas again,

for the call of the running tide

Is a wild call and a clear call

that may not be denied.

My style has slowly evolved from Early American Primitive into New England Coastal Cottage.  Throughout my little shangri la are small references to the place that I long to be, all against a coastal inspired light palette.

Little Cottage Lamp filled with Seashells.

Sea Inspired Colors on a vintage tin.

Old Maritime Pewter.

Shiplap and Portal Inspired Mirror.

Gifts from the Sea in a Hurricane Lamp.

Coastal Design for leisurely reading.

Nautical Lantern from the Rafter.

Vintage Ship Model and Poets Lantern.

  1. Living on the coast we’re exposed to much sea-inspired decor and decoration (if one can even call much of it “inspired”) Wicker and rattan furniture covered with pastel-colored cushions and pillows, shell-encrusted mirrors, gaudy paintings of “wet”-scapes or marine life or waterfowl may be “nautical” but they needn’t be cheap knock-offs. I love the genuine materials and artifacts re-purposed here. THIS is decor…the other is just a cheap way to decorate a rental condo near the beach. *shiver* Thanks for sharing, Cynthia!

    • Well said. I am sooooo happy you make that point. Of course there are some sea shells scattered about…but I try to avoid “theme decorating.” I prefer more subtle references by way of color and texture. You are so spot on with your comment. Thank you for sharing:)

    • p.s. I am jealous that you live on/near the coast. Here in landlocked dallas, we can only dare to dream!
